Help Save The Rainforest!

A Learning Website for Middle School Students


Teachers

This project was designed for middle school students enrolled in a Computer Applications class.  This class fulfills a high school graduation requirement.  This project fulfills the following Michigan Department of Education Technology Content Standards

1. Basic Operations and Concepts.
    a. Students demonstrate a sound understanding of the nature and operation of technology systems.
    b. Students are proficient in the use of technology.
 
2. Social, ethical, and human issues.
    b. Students practice responsible use of technology systems, information, and software.
 
3. Technology productivity tools
    a. Students use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity.
    b. Students use productivity tools to collaborate in constructing technology-enhanced models, 
        prepare publications, and produce other creative works.
 
4. Technology communications tools.
    a. Students use telecommunications to collaborate, publish, and interact with peers, experts, and other audiences.
 
5. Technology research tools.
    a. Students use technology to locate, evaluate, and collect information from a variety of sources.

 

Students

The main point of this project is:  You must educate me about the Rainforest and you must convince me to want to help save the Rainforest!  You will use the following tools for this project: 


 

Activity 1:    Gather 20 Facts About The Rainforest.
Answer the four questions listed below.  
Design appropriate searches using these search engines: Google, AskForKids, and Yahooligans.  

Write your answers on lined paper using complete sentences.  
No plagiarizing - write using your own words.  
Write down a citation for every website you use.

    Find 5 descriptive facts. What is the Rainforest? Describe it. I want to feel like I am there!

  2. Help save the Rainforest because...  
    Find 5 really good reasons. Show me why I should help save it.

  3. Help save the Rainforest by...  
    Find 5 really good suggestions. Give suggestions that are doable and helpful.

  4. 5 more facts about the Rainforest that everyone should know...  
    Find 5 facts that will convince me that the Rainforest is worth saving!
 

 

Activity 2:    Design 5 Graphics.
Check out this site, RF Graphics.  
Open up a new paint file.  
Create the 5 graphics listed below in one paint file.  
Save this paint file as: RF Graphics

Graphic 1    Create a graphic that goes with this title, Help Save The Rainforest!
Graphic 2    Create a graphic that shows what the Rainforest looks like.
Graphic 3    Create a graphic that goes along with one of your reasons. 
Graphic 4    Create a graphic that goes along with one of your suggestions.
Graphic 5    Create a graphic that goes along with one or two of your facts.

 

 

Activity 3:    Create a PowerPoint Slideshow.
Create the 6 slides listed below.  
Convince me to want to help save the Rainforest!  
Remember, all the information that you include in your slideshow must be true and it must be accurate.  
No plagiarizing - write using your own words.  You will loose points for copying.

Activity 4:    Write a speech for your slideshow.

  1. Write a 5 minute speech for your slideshow.   
  2. Practice your speech.  
  3. Be prepared to present your slideshow and your speech to the class
