The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag
 
The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag was written by Francis Bellamy.  In 1892, it was published in the September 8th issue of The Youth's Companion This was the leading family magazine and the Reader's Digest of its day.  
 
The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag is an oath of loyalty to the United States flag and to the nation.  
 
In 1942, Congress officially recognized The Pledge of Allegiance.

I pledge allegiance to the Flag 
of the United States of America, 
and to the Republic for which it stands, 
one Nation under God, indivisible, 
with liberty and justice for all.
allegiance = loyalty
republic = It's a form of government where the power belongs to the people. The people elect representatives.  These representatives are responsible to act on behalf of the people who elected them.
indivisible = whole, complete, cannot be divided up
