Activity 7:  Student Code of Conduct: A Discussion

  1. Click on this link, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School's Student Code of Conduct.  Print out this Student Code of Conduct and xerox a class set  - xerox just the student code of conduct.  

  2. Give each student a copy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School's Student Code of Conduct. 
    Then say something, like
      this: “Many middle schools in the United States have a Student Code of Conduct, much like the one you are holding in your hand.  Today, we’re going to discuss this Student Code of Conduct as a class.”

Read the Student Code of Conduct out loud and discuss the following questions: 

  1. How do you think this student code of conduct helps the kids who attend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School?

  2. Which parts of this student code of conduct do you like best?  Why?

  3. Which parts of this student code of conduct would you change?  Why?  

  4. Which parts of this student code of conduct would you delete or remove?  Why?

  5. Which parts of this student code of conduct would you keep the same?  Why?

 

Activity 7:  Student Code of Conduct: An Assignment

Please Note:  Students will need a copy of The Core Values - Definitions Sheet  and Our Middle School's Student Code of Conduct Chart to be successful with the following activity. 

 

At the conclusion of the above discussion, introduce this activity: 

“We have spent time discussing and thinking about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School's Student Code of Conduct.  Today, our class is going to begin writing a Student Code of Conduct Chart for our school."

 

"Let’s begin filling out Our Middle School's Student Code of Conduct Chart together.  Let's do one line at a time, so ...

  1. Who wants to suggest an Expected Behavior?  What behavior(s)do you think most adults in this building expect from you? 

  2. Let’s figure out a description for this Expected Behavior.  What does it mean to …

  3. OK, now which core value(s) goes with this Expected Behavior?  Why do you think that?"
