A Learning Site for Middle
School Students

Some Great Math Sites
To Visit!
- About The Numbers In Today's Date
This site was
created by Richard Phillips at the University of
Nottingham.
A Suggestion
Visit this site. Read all about today's date. Then do the
same thing he did - for tomorrow's date or for your
birthday - without peeking.
- Beat the Calculator!
(Includes Division Tips & Multiplication Tips)
Much thanks to The
Math Forum for this website.
A Suggestion
Check out this site and learn how to do mental math FAST.
Then put a handout together for your classmates. Share
five things that you learned using your own words and
your own examples. Make sure your explanations and your
example problems are clear.
- Brain Teasers
Much thanks to the
Houghton Mifflin Company for this website.
A Suggestion
Ponder, ponder, ponder!
Join forces with a classmate, go to this site and solve
one or two of these brain teasers.
Another Suggestion
Find a brain teaser that you want to solve. Print it out.
Solve it. Then share that problem and your solution with
a friend. Be prepared to explain HOW you solved it.
- Clever Games for Clever People
These games are
from John Conway's book, On Numbers and Games.
A Suggestion
Visit this site. Play a few of these games, then design
your own game - a math card game or a math board game. A
game where each player must use their math skills to
arrive at an answer before they are allowed to draw the
next card or take the next turn. Don't make your game too
easy. Include some challenging math questions, questions
that make a person think! Give your math game a name,
make all the necessary game parts and write up a sheet of
clear directions.
When you have finished creating your game, share it with
your classmates.
- Currency Converter
This site, 164
Currency Converter, was created by OANDA.
A Suggestion
Use the Currency Converter to help you solve the
following problem. Early this morning, you and your
family returned from a trip around the world. The
refrigerator was empty and everyone was hungry. So your
mother sent you to the store with a handful of coins from
many different countries and this list: 2 loaves of
bread, 9 yogurts, 1 half gallon of whole milk and 1 half
gallon of 2% milk.
SO...
How many pesos did it cost you for the two loaves of
bread? The loaf of cinnamon bread cost $1.29 and the loaf
of whole wheat bread cost $1.69. How many marks did it
cost you for the 9 containers of yogurt? The price was
two yogurts for .89 cents.
How many roubles did it cost you for the half gallon of
whole milk and the half gallon of 2% milk? The half
gallon of whole milk cost $1.17. The half gallon of 2%
milk cost a third more than the half gallon of whole
milk.
What would the total bill have been if you had paid for
it in U.S. currency?
Another Suggestion
Create a challenging story problem that your classmates
could solve using the Currency Converter.
- Doctor Math: Middle School Level
This site is
brought to you by The Math Forum.
A Suggestion
Doctor Math knows just about everything there is to know
about math. Browse this site and look at some of the
questions he has answered. Then come up with a math
question of your own and submit it to him at Ask Dr. Math.
- Geometry Problem of the Week
This is a Math
Forum website.
A Suggestion
If you enjoy geometry, this site is for you! Each week,
you will find a new geometry problem to solve. Share
these problems and your solutions with your math teacher.
Make sure you can explain the reasoning behind your
solutions.
- Mathematical Quotations Server Search
This site is
maintained by Mark Woodard at Furman University.
A Comment
You are going to find some wonderful thoughts at this
site, like the following two quotes.
Albert Einstein (on science)... "Imagination is
more important than knowledge." What does this
statement mean? Do you agree with it? Why or why not?
G. K. Chesterton... "It isn't that they can't see
the solution. It is that they can't see the
problem." Has this ever happened to you? When?
And what did you do about it?
A Suggestion
Explore this site. Find three quotations that you agree
with. Copy them down and explain why you agree with them.
Then ask your teacher if you can set up a 'Math Quote
Corner' on the bulletin board where you and your
classmates can display the great quotes you discover.
Another Suggestion
Explore this site. Read some of the great thoughts that
mathematicians over the ages have had about math, life
and the universe. Then create your own great quote about
some aspect of math. Share it with your teacher, then
display it in the 'Math Quote Corner' on the bulletin
board.
- Map
Quest
Much thanks to
GeoSystems Global Corp. for this website.
The San Diego Travel
Problem
Use Map Quest to help you solve the following problem. MaryJo lives in Chicago, IL and she wants to visit San
Diego, CA. She has $1000.00 to spend on her twelve day
vacation. She will travel by car, driving 8 hours each
day. While on the highway, MaryJo will travel around 65
mph. Her car has an 18 gallon gas tank and averages 26.5
miles per gallon. Gas usually costs her $2.20 per gallon. She plans on spending $35.00 a night on lodging and
$22.50 a day on food. While she is in SanDiego she would
like to visit the San Diego Zoo,
Sea World of
California & the Stephen
Birch Aquarium-Museum.
What
is your recommendation?
Does MaryJo have enough time to
make this trip?
How many days will it take her to get to
San Diego and to get back home again?
Can she afford this
trip or does she need to save up more money before she
takes off for San Diego?
If yes, how much more money
would she need to save?
How much will her expenses
average per day?
How much will her expenses be for 12
days?
Will she be able to afford any souvenirs?
The Boston Travel Problem
This problem is an extension of the San Diego Travel
Problem. To solve this problem, use Map Quest and the
travel information found in the San Diego Travel Problem.
Mary Jo still has $1000.00 to spend on her twelve day
vacation. But for this vacation her lodging expenses will
average $40.00 per night and her food cost will average
$25.00 a day.
SO...
What is your recommendation?
Would it be better timewise
and moneywise if MaryJo changed her plans and visited
Boston, MA instead of San Diego, CA?
Once there, she
could take in a Whale Watch,
visit Cape Cod,
and walk
the Freedom Trail.
What do you think,
should MaryJo visit San Diego or should she visit Boston?
- Hotel Infinity
This intriguing
story problem was created by This is Mega Mathematics!
A Suggestion
Read this problem. Then write up a proposal recommending
this problem to your teacher for your entire math class
to solve. Make sure you tell your teacher why you are
recommending this problem.
Another Suggestion
Summarize this problem then explain how and why Hotel
Infinity is always able to accept additional guests.
Present your summary and your solution to the class.
Another Suggestion
Hotel Infinity is indeed a unique place to visit. Create
a poster board advertisement for Hotel Infinity showing
why this hotel has the name it has.
- Word Problems For Kids
Much thanks to the
educators who made this site possible.
A Suggestion
There are so many wonderful problems to explore at this
site and they are grouped together and labeled by grade
level. Go to this site and select the grade level you are
most comfortable with. Read all the problems at that
level before selecting the problem or problems you want
to do. Then proceed to do them. If it were me, I would
want to solve some of these problems with a friend
because I think these problems would be so interesting to
talk about.
