Monday, May 22, 2006 - Day 1
11:00 AM Walking Tour of Midtown
On our walking tour, stroll down glamorous Fifth Avenue in the heart of midtown Manhattan. Pass Rockefeller Center, home to NBC Studios and Radio City Music Hall, an Art Deco triumph. Absorb the grandeur of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, with its 26-foot-wide rose window and soaring Gothic spires. These peaks were added in the 1880s, nearly 30 years after the cathedral’s construction. Continue past the ultramodern Trump Tower and F.A.O. Schwarz, the world’s largest toy store. Reach Central Park, New York’s 840-acre pastoral retreat. In 1844, renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted designed Central Park in response to local demand for the establishment of a public park to preserve the city’s woodland from increasing urbanization.
1:00 PM Empire State Building and Observatory
This evening, view the city from the Empire State Building’s observation deck. Once the world’s tallest building, the Empire State Building remains one of Manhattan’s most elegant symbols. Built in just over a year during the depths of the Depression, this limestone beauty’s iconic status was sealed in 1933, when the building starred in King Kong. Since the 1976 bicentennial celebration, the building’s top stories have glowed at night with seasonal colors.

9:00 AM Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island
Ferry to Liberty Island to marvel at the Statue of Liberty. A gift from France in honor of the French-U.S. alliance, the 151-foot-tall statue’s iron skeleton was designed by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (of Eiffel Tower fame), sculpted by F. A. Bartholdi and modeled on the Colossus of Rhodes. Liberty Enlightening the World, the statue’s full title, was unveiled to much fanfare in 1888. Continue on to Ellis Island, which welcomed millions of immigrants to the New World around the turn of the century. Ellis Island is now the site of a museum chronicling the history of European immigration.
1:00 PM Free Time
Enjoy free time for your own explorations of the city.
4:00 PM Walking Tour of Soho & Greenwich Village
Just north of SoHo you’ll find the narrow, winding streets of Greenwich Village, a hotspot of the 1950s Beat movement. The focal point of the neighborhood is Washington Square Park, framed by the buildings of New York University. “The Village,” as it’s known to New Yorkers, was settled in colonial times by residents of New York City, which was then confined to the region south of Wall Street. In the 1880s, immigrants moved into the area in great numbers. By the turn of the 20th century, the neighborhood’s diverse ethnic population, tolerant atmosphere, and low rents began to attract artists and writers from all parts of the U.S. The powerful mix gave birth to the country’s first, and most celebrated, haven of Bohemianism.

12:00 PM Lunch in Midtown Manhattan at your own expense.
Stop for a bite to eat right in the middle of bustling Manhattan. Find a traditional New York deli and enjoy your favorite sandwich as you absorb the neon lights of Times Square- home to Broadway’s best musicals-or relax under a tree in nearby Bryant Park.
1:00 PM Guided sightseeing of New York
An expert local guide leads your sightseeing tour of New York City. Travel down Wall Street in the Financial District. Site of the bustling New York Stock Exchange, Wall Street got its name from cautious Dutch settlers who built a wooden wall around their settlement for protection. Pass the United Nations Building, officially an “international zone” and not part of the United States at all. Drive through Greenwich Village, New York’s raffish province of bohemians, immigrants and students, and pass the cast-iron architecture of impossibly trendy SoHo (from “SOuth of HOuston Street”). Continue through the culturally rich immigrant communities of Chinatown, Little Italy and Harlem. You’ll also make a stop outside MTV’s studio for a glimpse of the popular “Total Request Live” program.

Take an insider’s look at the U.N. and see the Security Council Chamber and General Assembly Hall. Then take part in a Model U.N. simulation, led by the United Nations Association of the USA. UNA-USA’s widely popular program, participated in by over 200,000 young people around the world every year, simulates the U.N.’s General Assembly, Security Council and other deliberative bodies. Students “role play” U.N. ambassadors from member countries and debate the most current issues, from the global response to terrorism to human rights and peacekeeping. They prepare resolutions, debate proposals and navigate the U.N.’s rules of procedure, all in the interest of learning cooperation and conflict resolution.
