Stout Middle School
Spirit in Flight
 Theme School

William B. Stout Middle School, whose namesake is the designer of the Ford Tri-Motor aircraft, is incorporating the Spirit of Flight into the curriculum and activities this year.

On October 24, 1934, Dr. Jeannette Piccard launched a hot air balloon from what was to become the Stout Middle School grounds.  She piloted the balloon to 57,579 feet, becoming the first woman to reach the stratosphere, and might properly be called "The 1st Woman In Space."

On Friday, October 22, 2004, Stout Middle School commemorated the 70th anniversary of the Piccard flight with a speaker about aviation and the tethering of a hot air balloon on the school grounds.

Our school has displays in the school lobby regarding William B. Stout and Jeannette Piccard.
