Intramural Coaches

Mr. Abel & Mr. Krug, Head Coaches

This year, Mr. Abel and Mr. Krug are sharing the responsibilities of Intramural Sports.  Both have coached individual intramural sports over the past few years.

Mr. Tom Haftley, Intramural Swimming Coach

Mr. Haftley has served as a high school swim coach at Owasso, Monroe, Monroe Jefferson, and Belleville.  He has been coaching Intramural Swimming for the past 4 years, and has an easy going approach that allows our students to enjoy themselves as they learn.  He is currently a physical education teacher at Belleville’s North Middle School and is also their Track coach.  Swimming is a lifetime sport that develops skills that promote health, fitness, and safety.  Mr. Haftley commented that South’s Intramural Swimmers are “extremely well behaved.”

Mr. Kevin Krug, Intramural Wrestling and Football Coach

Mr. Krug is one of South’s most energetic teachers.  He has coached wrestling for South’s 7th and 8th grade team, and has been South’s Intramural coach for over 5 years.  Mr. Krug has the ability to motivate young girls and boys and develop skills that can allow them to be a knowledgeable wrestler at the next level.

Mr. Krug is also one of South’s 7th grade football coaches, and has been the IM Flag Football coach for several years.  He has also coached IM Roller Hockey – a sport that has been slowly being inserted into the intramural program.

Mrs. April Marcotte, Intramural Cheerleading Coach
Mrs Marcotte is South's "Super Volunteer".  She  not only coaches Cheerleading, but also Martial Arts, and Aerobics.  When Mrs. Marcotte coaches - she seems to involve most of her family.  She began when her daughter, Lacy Jo, was a 6th grader, and has graciously continued on.  Students learn discipline and respect in a manner that allows them to enjoy themselves while being competitive.  In the past, Mrs. Marcotte was South's Cheerleading coach.

Mrs. Bonnie Stamm, Intramural Volleyball Coach
Mrs. Stamm has been involved in winning volleyball for over ten years at South.  She has been the head volleyball coach for 7th & 8th graders and has the knowledge to produce excellent skill-oriented athletes in this sport.  She has coached IM volleyball for several years, and South's 6th graders usually list this sport as one of their favorites.

Mr. Charles Brown, Intramural Basketball Coach
Mr. Brown has coached our basketball program for the past several years.  He has an easay going manner - that still allows him to manage the large groups that this sport entices.  Sixth graders learn through drills and scrimmages the meaning of team work - in contrast to what they learn in their driveway or on the playground.

Mr. Phillip Bonjourno, Intramural Soccer Coach

Mr. Bonjourno has coached our Soccer program for South’s IM program for the past several years.  He is the President of The
Van Buren Soccer Association and credits his involvement with intramurals for helping to double participation in Van Buren’s soccer leagues over the past few years.  Our students take to Mr. Bonjourno as he teaches through a variety of games and instructions on soccer skills.  We can only employ one coach from outside our school – and we save this position each year for Mr. Bonjourno.  He is a big asset to our program.

Mr. Carl Marosi, Intramural Coach

Mr. Marosi was the director of Intramurals for many
years and will continue to assist us this year in various
coaching positions.

Ms. Stacy Belleau, Intramural Softball Coach

Mrs. Belleau has coached IM Softball at South for the past 2 years.  Most of her background in softball has been recreational, although she has played on a league team.  Ms. Belleau has a firm but friendly manner that allows her to lead and keep the students interest in this sport.

Mr. Shannon Hill, Intramural Fishing Coach

Mr. Hill loves fishing.  He is the perfect fit for our IM Fishing Coach.  He is knowledgeable and enjoys instilling a love of fishing to our students.  Mr. Hill has been our only coach since we started including this sport 3 years ago.

Miss Candice Marcotte, Intramural Cheerleading Coach

Miss Marcotte is, indeed the daughter of April.  She was one of Belleville High School’s most energetic cheerleaders over the past 4 years, and has helped coach South’s IM Cheerleading over the past few years.  She treats our students with respect while providing helpful hints to prospective SMS Cheerleaders.  She has an ability to control and instruct with unusual success for a young lady just out of high school.  Candice is now attending the University of Michigan and is on their Cheerleading Squad.

Mr. Fred Abel, Intramural Football Coach

Mr. Abel has a relaxed, yet competent, style of instruction.  His love for athletics allows him to instill students with enthusiasm.  He has coached IM Football for the past 3 years and has also taken on IM Track.  Mr. Abel has worked with Mr. Krug as South 7th grade Football Coach for several years.
