Math expectations
2001

August 28, 2001

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I would like to welcome you and your son or daughter to Brownstown Middle School. I will be your child's mathematics teacher for the year. Many of the problems that your child will face this year are directly related to a lack of organizational skills. Hopefully by outlining the procedures and class expectations, we can assist them in having a successful year.

Below you will find a list of expectations and information that will assist you in helping your child get the most out of math this year.

MATERIALS NEEDED:     a 70 page single subject, wide ruled spiral notebook for all class work and homework, a duo-tang type three prong folder with pockets, pencils, and a red marking pencil for checking work.

NEEDED DAILY:       notebook, textbook, folder, Student Planner, and a pencil.

RECORD DAILY:     record daily assignments, which will be written on board, in assignment book.

EXPECTATIONS:

1. Each student is expected to complete all assigned work, both in (class work) and out of class (homework).

2. Your student will have math homework at least three or four nights a week. Please check their student planner daily.

3. For all textbook work, computations must be shown where needed to complete the assignment. Answer only work will be accepted when appropriate.

4. All chapter dittos are to be kept until the completion of each chapter. This includes homework, class work, written assignments, and other dittos.

5. Each assignment needs the student's name, date, student's assigned number, and block (A, B, C, or D). Written work requires the page number, and number of problems.

6. Your student will do well in this class if they consistently do the following four things:
                                        1) pay attention
                                        2) complete their homework
                                        3) study
                                        4) ask questions, when appropriate.

7. All work must be done in pencil. Work that is sloppy, doodled on, or done in pen will not be accepted. Neatness and effort will be used when determining point values for all assignments.

8. Assignments (class work/homework) will not be given a letter grade. Each assignment will have a point value of  5 which will be based on: a) neatness b) effort c) timeliness. Incomplete or improperly completed assignments will be given 1 point. A grade of "0" will be given to all missing/or late work.

9. Late assignments will not be accepted for credit without prior approval of the teacher. Students who are absent have one day for each day absent to make up work. It is the student's responsibility to request the make-up work.

10. All quiz and test scores are final. There are no retakes of tests or quizzes for an improved grade.

11. All graded quiz and test papers must be signed and returned, regardless of the grade received.

12. Each quarter grade is determined by total points. Your student's points will be from class work, homework, quiz, and test scores. Points will vary from quarter to quarter.

13. Proper classroom behavior is expected at all times. Parents will be notified by Parent Contact form, notes in Assignment Book and/or a phone call when a behavior problem arises.

The grading scale for tests and quizzes is listed below:

A     100 - 95%                                      C     76 - 73%
