Mission and Goals 9. Long Range Planning - coming soon 1. Mission and Goals The students and staff of North Middle School own the Media Center. Our goal is to v provide maximum access to resources for all, v instruction in the use of print and online resources for students and staff in alignment with local, state and federal curriculum requirements, and v to encourage reading for pleasure and a habit of life-long learning. Whenever feasible current best practices as recommended by the American Library Association and as dictated by State and Federal benchmarks will be implemented. Both secretaries and librarians will document policies and routines to facilitate the media center’s operation under any future management. 2. Book and Magazine Circulation, Overdue Policy, and Procedurev Students may check out a maximum of two books&/or magazines at any one time. v Books are due in three weeks and may be renewed as often as needed. v When possible, an overdue book reminder will be generated soon after the due date has past and routed to the student through their English teacher. v Books accrue an overdue fine of .5 cents per school day after a 3-day grace period. The maximum overdue fine per book is $2.00. v Students with overdue books may not check out new books until the books are returned and fines paid. v Students with long overdue books will be sent a bill to their home address. v When a book is paid for a receipt will be issued. Should the book be located within the current school year by the student or the library a full refund will be issued minus the overdue charge of two dollars. v Damaged books will be billed at fair market value. v We are unable to accept checks, cash only please. B. Reference CollectionThe books in our Reference collection are available for use only in the library. Teachers may sign them out for use in their classrooms. C. Internet v Http://students.resa.net/nmsmc is published by Ms. Kennedy to offer quick and customized resources for students and staff. v An AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) must be signed by both students and parent or guardian and be on file in the Media Center for a student to use the Internet. v An orientation to Internet resources will be provided for all incoming sixth graders in the fall, and assignment-linked instruction will be offered throughout the year. v The PTO funded computer lab in room 102 is available only to classes as scheduled by their teachers. Currently we offer 13 desktops, 16 laptops and one teacher computer all with Internet, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint programs. v In the Media Center over fifteen computers with Internet, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint are available for classes or students throughout the day. When coming on a pass, the student must check out a computer at the Circulation desk, place the corresponding tag in the pocket at the top of the computer monitor and return the tag when they are finished. Failure to return the computer tag results in a .25 fine. D. Printing v Students must ask permission to print. v Before printing, every document needs to be examined using "Print Preview," and the exact number of pages set rather than the default setting of "ALL." v Up to five pages may be printed per day at no charge. v There will be a charge of .05 per page for each page over 5. 4. Staff Services
v Copy and collating machines are available in the staff workroom and in the Media Center office. If there is a malfunction you are unable to remedy please notify the media center secretary immediately. v A Scantron machine is available in the audio-visual room. Forms are available from your Department Chairperson or the front office, v Two computers and printer with scanner and additional software is provided in the Staff workroom. v A computer with a CD-ROM writer is located in Room 102 labeled “Staff Only.” v Staff members are always welcome to use the telephones in the Media Center available in the AV room or Ms. Kennedy’s office. B. Audio-Visual Equipmentv A variety of presentation equipment is available for checkout to your classroom. A sign-out sheet in on the counter in the AV room. It is expected that the equipment will be returned at the end of the last day you have reserved. v Please lock your doors whenever you are not in your classroom. Funds are not available for equipment replacement. v Teachers are responsible for picking up and returning their own equipment. v Overheads may be stationed to your room for the year. Teachers are responsible for replacing bulbs. Instruction cheerfully provided. v Magazines for poster and art projects are available for checkout on a large “cut-up” cart. v Laminating and poster making are available upon request. v Ellison die cuts are available to help you decorate your room and may be used by students with your permission. C. Videos & DVDs A collection of videotapes for classroom use is stored in the Staff Workroom. Please sign and leave the checkout card. A DVD collection is iavailable in the AV room and is searable through the online catalog. Your requests for purchases are wecomed. Policies and Copyright Law Concerning Video Tapes and Digital Video Discs v Prior administrative approval must be secured before showing any VCR tape or DVD not recorded by the school, housed in a departmental collection, or ordered through the Media Center. v It is illegal to use videos or DVDs rented from commercial stores for instructional purposes in the classroom. v Videos taped from cable or broadcast for educational purposes may be used for face-to-face instruction during the ten school days following taping. The copy must be destroyed within 45 days. v Programs provided through pay services such as HBO, Cinemax, etc. may not be used in the classroom. v Further information regarding copyright law and sources for programs and lesson plans are available at http://students.resa.net/nmsmc/copyright.htm D. Circulating and Reference Books v Carts of books including encyclopedia sets are available for checkout to your classroom. Usually one-day notice is sufficient. Please do not allow students to take books home from your cart. v Staff members are encouraged to request books and DVDs for purchase they feel would enhance the curriculum. Orders are placed throughout the year.
