General Policies and Procedures

You will find Main Office procedures on Attendance, Tardiness, Arriving late, Homework requests, Leaving earlyMedications, Use of Telephone and Bus Passes here.

Attendance/Tardiness

Parent Responsibility:

a. Parents may send a written request for make-up work one week prior to a planned absence.  This work should be completed when the child returns. Teachers may provide work upon this request or upon the student's return from the absence.

b. Parents/guardians are asked to call and notify the office by the student's third consecutive day of absence.

c.  Homework Requests: If a student is absent three (3) or more days, parents can request that the office collect make-up work.  Teachers need 24 hours notice to assemble the work.  Work should then be completed upon the student's return to school.

d.  Following an absence from school, parents/guardians are asked to write a note indicating the reason for absence/late arrival.  This note, including date of absence and signature, should be presented to the first hour teacher for an admission slip.

Student Responsibility:

a. Students arriving late to school or leaving early must check in or out through the main office.

b. Admission slips should be presented to the student's teachers for signature.  If the absence is excused, students are able to make up work for credit.  Students are given one day for each day absent to make up work.  Students with an unexcused absence will not be allowed to make up work for credit.  However, students are encouraged to make up work so as not to fall behind in their classes.

Arriving Late.   Students arriving late to school should present a note form a parent of guardian to the office indicating the reason. The student will be issued a pass indicating unexcused or excused.  On the third unexcused tardy to school, parent contact will be made.  On the fourth unexcused tardy to school, a discipline referral will be issued.  Each subsequent tardy to school will result in a discipline referral for the remainder of the semester.

If the student does not have a note on the day of the tardy, the student has one day to bring a note to their first hour teacher to excuse the tardiness to school

Leaving early.  Students may be released to leave school early.  Only individuals listed on the student's emergency data sheet on file in the office may check students out of school.

MedicationsAll medication, prescription or non-prescription, is to remain in the office and all necessary paperwork must be completed and returned to the office.  The office secretary will make the arrangements for the medication to be taken at the prescribed time.

TelephoneNorth Middle School limits the use of the school telephone to matters of an emergency nature.  Students are not normally allowed to call home about books, lunches, unsigned forms or homework, etc.  Students must learn to take responsibility for these matters and plan ahead.  Students are not to call home to make arrangements for after-school activities as these arrangements should be made before leaving home.  North Middle School will be glad to deliver a message to your child in case of an emergency.  We will not interrupt class to have the student take a phone call, as time spent in class is invaluable.  A pay phone is available during passing time and during lunch.  Students are expected to be on time for class if they use the pay telephone.

Bus PassesBus pass requests should be turned in to the office before the beginning of third hour.  Requests will be reviewed and completed by the completion of the student's lunch period and passes can be picked up as the student returns to class.  All bus passes should be picked up before the beginning of sixth hour. Students should not be let of class nor will hall passes be issued by the office to complete this task.  Students who have been denied transportation privileges will not be issued bus passes.
