Parents' Page Welcome parents!! The purpose of the web-site is multifold. Its first mission is for the betterment of your child's education. From home, students are able to access the PowerPoint notes used during class each day. Contained within the PowerPoint notes are the daily lessons, daily journals (please see description of journals below), and weekly homework. If a student is absent from class, they are able to access what they missed from home. This precludes loss of instruction time, as students aren't required to make classroom inquiries about missed work. Additionally, study guides are available for downloading before they are distributed in class. This gives students a head start on reviewing for examinations. The second purpose of this site is for you, the parent, to see exactly what your child is doing in class. This site, combined with Zangle, should avoid these common responses from teens:
Please don't let your student fool you. They do know how to use this site! But, if you know how to use this site, it could put a damper on some evening plans. Probably not yours. FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions) Downloading questions: Downloading basics:
Q: Why can't I download the notes for next week? A: Notes are not posted in advance. Since it is often difficult to determine how long a concept might take to cover in class, I plan from scratch each day keeping a variety of factors in mind. Q: Why can't I download any of the daily lesson plans? A: Make sure that cookies are enabled and you have Microsoft PowerPoint. Q: When were the notes last updated? A: At the very top of each semester's page, in green, is the following: "This Page was last updated on: 08/28/2008 10:38 AM -0400GMT" The page will always be updated on Friday's and several other times during the week. Homework questions: Homework Basics (Economics): Homework: “All homework will be collected at the door the first day of the week. Once your student enters the classroom, their assignment will be late. No latework will be accepted!! Late assignments will receive zero points! Please note: “No name, no credit.”
Homework assignments for the trimester: Each week we will cover 3 sections from the textbook. At the end of each section there are between 7 and 8 section review questions. Your student is responsible for answering five (5) questions from each section for a grand total of 15 section review questions per week. Please note the following: Each question is worth 2 points, which means that each week there are 30 points worth of section review questions. · Points will be ducted for: wrong answers, incomplete answers, unclear answers, unanswered questions, and other reasons seen fit by the teacher. · The questions they choose to answer for points are up to them . · Please note, these are review questions, you CAN NOT review if you have NOT read the section. · Please read the section before you answer the questions. DO NOT short change the learning process!! Additionally, each week you will receive a test review, which is worth 10 points. It will be graded on completeness.
Homework Example (from Ch#1 sec#1 p.10) 3.) The fundamental economic problem is scarcity which is the condition that results from having unlimited wants and limited resources. Homework Basics (U.S. History) Classwork questions: Classwork basics: Classwork is due at the end of the hour in which it is assigned. Any work turned in after the class period in which it was assigned will receive zero points. It is up to your student to make-up the classwork they miss. Please note: classwork missed as a result of an unexcused absence receives no credit.
Journal questions: Journal basics (Economics & U.S. History) Journal: “Students are required to keep a journal of the various activities completed in class. Students will be graded on the quality and content of their journal on a regular basis.”
Journal assignments for the trimester: Each journal will be comprised of at least 2 parts, daily opener (warm-up activity) and daily class notes. Each complete journal will be worth a maximum of 5 points. Each day, your student is expected to be working on their journal when the bell rings, except test day, when the day will begin with the test instead of the warm-up. Warm-up questions must be answered with complete answers. Please note the following: · Part A is the warm-up activity. Normally your student be reading a short section from the textbook or a recent news article and answering a few questions on what they read. We will discuss the article and discuss the answers before moving on to the day’s first activity. · Part B is the daily lecture notes. Your student is expected to keep record of the daily lecture, but are NOT directed to copy the lecture notes word for word!! · Part C is the hands on activity and or film that reinforces the days main concepts. · Each Journal MUST be clearly labeled with the Journal# and the date. · Journals will be collected at regular frequency. Your student is responsible for having their journal each day and present it when it is collected. Q: How do I find the journals? 1.) Select the class from the links on the far right side of the screen. 2.) Locate the week you need and click on the week# highlighted in green. 3.) Once you click on the green link the power point will open on your computer. Q: What are the parts of the journals? A: Part I is the daily opener. It is usually a question or questions to answer following a reading selection. Part II and Part III are normally lecture notes or questions from a brief film. Q: How do I print the journals? A: I do not suggest printing the journals, but if you wish, please print notes page not the presentation. By printing the notes page you can print six slides to a page and save your printer ink. Test questions: Test basics:
Q: Why can't I download the study guide? A: Make sure you web-browser is enabled to download cookies and you have Microsoft Word. Additionally, if the link on the class web-page is not in blue and is not underlined, the study guide is not yet available for download. Q: Why are the questions on the study guide choppy and difficultly to read? A: Please keep in mind that the questions on the study guide are the actual test questions without the multiple choice answers listed below. If a student knows the concept of the question they should be able to identify the correct response on the test from the choices provided.
