Reading Recovery is a one-on-one reading program to assist first grade children who are just not learning to read through conventional classroom teaching. Gibraltar School District received a three-year-grant in 2000 to train four teachers to being this highly acclaimed method of instruction. Students are put through an accelerated program to catch up, or exceed their classmates reading abilities in a twenty-week time frame.
At Chapman school, 17 students have been taught the strategies of Reading Recovery. They are now in second and third grades. Two children have since moved and three did not discontinue from the Reading Recovery program. However, because of Reading Recovery they were able to be identified and referred to other means of reading support such a s special education. The 12 remaining students are reading at their grade levels or above. Four first grade students are currently receiving Reading Recovery instruction and two others have been able to discontinue this year, bringing the total year-to-date of discontinuing students up to 14. There will be more students (discontinued at grade level) by the end of the school year.
The three other elementary schools in the district are seeing the same positive results. A total of over 60 children have been helped from 2000-2002. These students could have been retained or referred for special support at the end of fist grade. Reading Recovery has proven that it works. Children continue to flourish long after they leave the program. Administrators and teachers are in support of this program continuing in theGibraltar School District.
