Battle of the Books

The Battle of the Books is a school-wide competition open to 4th and 5th graders each winter.  It's a voluntary program where students create teams with 4-6 students.  Teams work together for six weeks to read a total of 8 titles.  No team member is required to read all 8 books.  Teams can divide the reading among the members.  Six weeks after the books are introduced, students come to the Media Center for the Battle which is a quiz-bowl-style competition.  The three teams that answer the most questions correctly, are the winners. The top winners in both grades then compete in the District Battle, against the winning teams at Vandenberg Elementary.

Fisher Elementary continues to have high participation in the  ACCELERATED READER program .  Many classrooms set monthly goals.  When a student passes 10 quizzes, a star is placed on the wall with his or her name.  These students are known as "All Star Readers."
Third, fourth, and fifth grade students that pass 32 quizzes or earn 32 points will have their star moved to a different wall in the media center and a gold ribbon will be placed on the star.  They become "Gold Star Readers" and will be invited to an end of the year party.
Some students are working to achieve the highest goal, which is becoming a "Champion Star Reader."  These students will pass 65 quizzes or earn 65 points during the year.  Their star will be moved to the "Champion Star  Reader" wall and their picture will be hung up next to the star.  They will be featured on the morning announcements, invited to the end of the year party and receive a prize.

Each morning, announcements are broadcasted from the media center to every classroom  television.  Mr. Decker leads a rotating group of 4th and 5th graders that have the role of announcers.  After just a few weeks, the students learn how to set up the video camera and display the PowerPoint presentation that acts as a backdrop.  This opportunity allows the students to enhance their public speaking skills.  Additional students are invited down each morning to lead the school in saying the Pledge of Allegiance.
