Why I'm a MEAN Teacher!

A wide variety of selected literature will be required throughout the high school experience at BHS. This includes some selections of Shakespeare, 17th, 18th , 19th and 20th Century writers from America as well as from around the world. Some novels are included in the prescribed curriculum, but no single curriculum can take the place of a student’s independent reading.

Throughout high school, students will be encouraged to read by teachers in all areas of study. Nothing enriches a student’s understanding of an era, an event, or a mindset quite like seeing it through the eyes of a character involved in it. So much is gained through outside reading – historical perspectives, values of the day, common struggles humanity faces, life experiences from other cultures, not to mention improved critical thinking skills, vocabulary improvement, and inferential skills for the reader.

If students are serious about pursuing educational goals beyond high school, nothing will prepare them as well for the rigors of college or university studies as reading avidly. Following is a list of selected titles that appear repeatedly in published college and university reading lists.
