Course
Description:
Spanish I is an introduction to the Spanish language and cultures. The
students will learn to speak and understand the language through use of
dialogue, oral exercises, patterns of pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary,
and listening comprehension exercises.
Major
Areas of Study:
Basic vocabulary, present-tense verbs (regular and irregular), adjective
agreement, pronunciation, and basic cultural information about various
Spanish-speaking countries.
Objectives:
Students will be able to:
Identify Spanish-speaking countries of the world
Develop basic skills in Spanish in the following areas:
Speaking
Listening
Reading
Writing
Acquire a basic knowledge of the cultures of various Spanish-speaking
countries
Activities and Skill Development:
Students will demonstrate that they can do the following and will be
assessed by oral and written evaluation (tests, quizzes, paragraphs):
1. Introduce themselves and others (formally and informally)
2. Understand and use classroom commands and objects
3. Describe themselves and others using various adjectives (physical
descriptions,
clothing,
personality, age, hobbies, likes/dislikes, professions, address/phone)
4. Describe weather, time, date/day
5. Know numbers zero - one billion
6. Talk about school classes and activities (sports, etc.)
7. Talk about family, family relationships and belongings (possession)
8. Order food and drink and talk about food likes and dislikes
9. Know how to conjugate -ar, -er and -ir verbs in the present tense
(regular and
irregular verbs)
10. Be able to talk about shopping (names of stores, etc.), places (library,
main square,
school, etc.)
11. Develop the following projects: fashion show video, restaurant menu,
skit, family
photo album)
12. Develop a writing portfolio with paragraphs about the topics listed
above.
